Altai Republic (RUS)
Untouched river and mountain nature
Altai with Kasachstan, Mongolia and China on its borders is also called the
“Russian Tibet”. The confluence of the River Katun (668km) and Byia (301km)
is at Byisk, where they form the river Ob. There are 7000 lakes and mountains
as high as Mount Beluhkha (4506m). About 35% of the population is ethnic
Altai. The indigenous Altai culture considers the lands of Altai to be sacred.
